Building Realtionships Online – Step 1

Dear Readers,

Earlier this week I wrote that in marketing your business online you need to focus more on building relationships and less on advertising your links. If you agree, then your next question is going to be:

How do I build realtionships online?

Over the next few posts I’ll give you some tips and ideas.

Today let’s talk about posting on sites like Facebook.  You can see my Facebook profile and my Facebook fan page. I actually have a few fan pages for my different products.

The “easy” way to market on Facebook seems to just be to post links.  Having a webinar? Post a link or setup an event and post that.  Having an opportunity meeting? Setup an event and invite your friends…Want to make a few extra sales? Post a link to your online store.

But it doesn’t work that way.  It isn’t that easy.  Rarely do people respond to those kinds of posts.

If you want to build realtionships you need to communicate…  One way to start a conversation is to ask questions.  Take a look at your Facebook statuses.  Take a look at your friends status messages.  Look for status updates where people respond the most.  I am willing to bet that most of these posts are questions.  Someone asked a question and got  alot of responses.

Another type of status message that is guaranteed to get a lot of responses?  Controversy.  A buddy of mine is great at this.  His status messages frequently have 20 or 30 responses to them.  Why?  He is very politically uncorrect.  He has a lot of fun with it and no one takes it too seriously.  People want to see what he is going to say every day.

You can also apply these two ideas to other mediums.  You can make sure your blog posts end with a question or series of questions to encourage your readers to leave comments.  You can write controversial blog posts to get a lot of comments and engage readers.

It is really that simple.

So what question did I ask yesterday on Facebook? “What is your favorite fat free salad dressing?”

Now I know it doesn’t have anything to do with my business but it does engage people (and if I was in a health/nutrition related business it might be business related!)

Take some time over the next couple of days and look closely at the Facebook posts which have the most comments. I bet you’ll find most of them are either questions or controversial topics!

Hey Benjamin! Great tips on creating a relationship on Facebook especially… I believe the people most interested in you will be answering your questions and posting to your statuses. I guess it’s very important to do the same, by replying to people’s statuses and answering their questions too.. that way you can get even more attention to your posts!

Thanks for sharing Ben! ;)

Darren Spruyt
