How to avoid the Twitter Noise

Dear Readers,

One of my biggest issues with Twitter was always that it was too noisy. I was following too many people which made it hard for me to follow the people I wanted to really hear from.  My stream is constantly scrolling and makes it hard to follow anyone.

So how can you cut down on the noise?

Step 1 – Use a  Twitter tool or service like those I mentioned yesterday to filter your tweets.

Step 2 – Use Manage Flitter to mass un-follow people you don’t want to follow any more or who post a lot of spam.

Step 3 - Make Twitter lists to help filter out the messages from people you want to follow closely.

Twitter Lists allow you to group people who you want to follow.  Now that I’ve discovered this I’m much happier. I can follow people I want to follow!

I will create a list like “MLM“.  Then I’ll put in leaders like ArtJonak, Ann_Sieg, thatMLMbeat, BigALMLM, etc.  (You can also see other people’s lists if they are public!)  To put in people I simply search for the people I want to add to a list.  There are two icons next to their name. One which lets me do things like follow, unfollow, block, report for spamming, etc. The other one is the list icon. Clicking it allows me to add them to a list.

After I create the lists I can now setup my Twitter tool to organize those lists. I setup a couple tabs in HootSuite for this. I have a tab of just my lists of “business”.  In this tab I have separate columns which contain my lists for MLM leaders, of inspirational leaders, of business gurus, blogging, SEO, and even companies I want to follow. I also have a tab in HootSuite which has my fun lists… hobbies, celebs, or other entertainment related activities.

Now that I have lists and I have them organized in my HootSuite tabs, they are very easy for me to keep up with.  I can add or subtract people to these lists as necessary. If I find someone is tweeting too much and not providing enough value I can remove them.  If I find someone else I should be following I can add them.

Already Twitter has gotten a lot easier for me to manage and has become a lot more useful.  I can easily find new stuff to tweet about and retweet.

In 2011 I think I’m going to be doing a lot more tweeting!

Hope you are finding these useful.  I still have a few more tips to share!
