Marketing on Facebook

facebook fan page Marketing on FacebookDear Readers,

You probably know by now I’ve been doing research into social media marketing.

Social Media is HOT right now so I want to learn more about it.

I’ve been studying Facebook specifically and wanted to share a few ideas with you.

There are 3 main types of Facebook sites.

  • Facebook personal profiles
  • Facebook fan pages
  • Facebook groups

When marketing on Facebook it is important to know the differences between the 3 types of Facebook sites.

  • Facebook profiles are intended to be personal profiles for people. They are specifically not to be used by businesses.
  • Facebook fan pages are supposed to be used by businesses, organizations, brands, products, celebrities, artists, and public figures.
  • Facebook groups are supposed to be use by special interest groups that want to communicate with one another.

When you first setup an account at Facebook you are setting up a personal profile. This is intended to be your personal account. The personal profile is intended to be for people only, and not for businesses or products.

Your Facebook personal profile has limitations. One limitation is the friend limit of 5000 people (in reality you can usually only accept a little less than 5000). In order to prevent abuse of these personal profiles Facebook has added a limitation to prevent you from broadcasting messages to all your friends. Let’s say for example you had 200 friends and wanted to invite them all to an event, Facebook prohibits this. You can only invite 100 of them. Then you would have to wait a 24 hours to invite the rest.

Many of us in network marketing think we’re going to get 1000 friends and be able to broadcast messages and invite them all to our events… but this is not the purpose of personal profiles. We should be using Fan Pages or Groups if we want to pursue this type of marketing.

Facebook Fan Pages are intended for business owners to be able to broadcast and communicate with our entire fan base… whether it is 100 or 100,000 people. In fact people expect to get more of a commercial type communication from a fan page than a personal profile.

For more on the limitations of a Facebook fan pages and marketing on Facebook check back later this week.
