21 Characteristics of Leadership
Last week I was preparing a training for my team on the 21 characteristics of leadership.
This is a good practice for us as network marketers who are looking for leaders to join our business.
What qualities make for a good leader?
These are qualities you want to look for when you’re recruiting.
I did some research for my training and found a great web site at the University of Oregon’s Holden Leadership Center. See the full list of leadership characteristics here.
Here are a few from the list:
- Proactive
- Flexible
- Good Communicator
- Respectful
- Confident
- Enthusiastic
- Open Minded
- Resourceful
- Evaluative
- Organized
- Consistent
- Delegator
- Initiative
- Honest
- Inspirational
- Trustworthy
- Loyal
- Friendly
- Visionary
- Positive
- Dependable
You can click the link above to read in more detail what the University of Oregon says about each of these 21 characteristics of leadership.
These lists weren’t originally created for network marketing but we can use these as a guideline in our business.
Where can we meet people who exhibit this leadership qualities? What types of groups or organizations have friendly, outgoing, positive, upbeat, intelligent, inspirational, leaders?
If you can figure that out, you’ll find more quality prospects than you can handle.
Here’s a tip… Look for people who are involved in personal development and improving their skills. That might be a good place to start. Don’t you think?

This is good leadership qualities. Great blog!
what baffles me is, how would you expect one person to posses and display all these characteristics and attributes! worst still, how can you discover all these during a recruitment exercise?
to me it seems you would never recruit anyone if this perfection is expected. by the way, how many of these qualities do you posses?
Hi Angelo,
Thanks for responding.
I doubt anyone has all of those characteristics. I merely shared them with you to give you an idea of qualities to look for in people.
As far as how can this be applied to a recruitment exercise, you can start by looking for places where you can find people who share these qualities are.
What kind of magazines or newspapers might these people read? What kind of web sites might they visit?
If you could find a newspaper or magazine that attracted that kind of person, perhaps it would be a good place to advertise?
Sometimes we go out and speak to our friends, but our friends are not qualified prospects. If my friend has never had a business… if my friend has never made a 6 or 7 figure income… then perhaps they aren’t the best person to speak to about my opporunity. Instead I want to look for people who have had businesses before. People who have been successful before. People who know what it takes to build a successful business or bounce back from a failed business.
Does that make sense?
