Self installed Autoresponders? or 3rd Party Autoresponder?

Ben (a.k.a, web guru!),

Have you ever evaluated any autoresponder packages that can be bought just once and installed on a hosted domain space, thus providing similar functionality to what Aweber or Constant Contact does via a monthly fee?

(I googled and found a few of those one-time-install packages.)

I know there are probably a lot of benefits of using a monthly subscription from a major provider instead of doing it on your own hosting space, but are the any *strong* reasons to definitely not use a self hosted autoresponder?

(Maybe the answer to this could be a blog entry on your ComTech News site!)

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the great question. This probably should go on the blog! (Allthough the one I post to most often is HomeBusinessBlogs.com)

Let me tell you about Fabio. Fabio was once known as Fabman and he built a big mailing list from people who wanted his financial advice. He was popular on Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad forums and this eventually led to Fabman releasing a book. Fabman built a large mailing list by giving away a free “financial advice” report for newbies.

Slowly Fabman’s mailing list began becoming more and more unresponsive.

As Fabman began to learn more about email marketing. He learned what happens when people are accused of spam and that they can be put on spam blacklists where a domain name or ipaddress gets banned. He found out how to check and see if his domain name or ip was banned and low and behold found that his emails had been being blocked by spam filters.

Fabman has some successful internet businesses and he now uses 3rd party autoresponder hosting by Aweber (just like I do.)

So the moral of the story is… Yes autoresponder software seems neat. It seems more affordable. It seems like the way to go. However unless you have the resources to track your spam complaints, make sure you don’t get blacklisted, change ips, and change domain names if you do get blacklisted… If you don’t have those kind of resources then it is worth it to pay a reliable email host/autoresponder host to host your list for you.

Thanks for the great question!
