Time Management - Shutting down IM and Email
A few days ago I wrote about a new Instant Messenger I’ve been using called Meebo which allows me to manage several different instant messengers, but best of all it’s a web based system instead of software. You use Meebo so you can use AIM, MSN, Google Talk, or Yahoo instant messengers all at the same time.
Mary made a great comment. She commented that she had to stop using instant messaging because it was interfering with her work.
A friend of mine gave me a great time management tip. He says he shuts down email and IM and only turns them on for 15 minutes at a time. So maybe he works for 2 hours non stop and then only turns on email and IM for 15 minutes to catch up on anything important. That way he isn’t being interrupted non-stop while he’s trying to work.
I thought it was a great tip. One of the best things about Meebo is since it’s a web based instant messenger client, you just shut down the web browser window when you don’t want to be interrupted. Maybe once an hour or once every couple of hours you can open that window. Or if you absolutely feel you have to be available all the time you can have the web browser minimized. That way you don’t get all these popups interfering with your work and distracting you all the time.
What do you think?
