Why Most MLMers Quit Too Soon

Have you ever wondered why most MLMers quit too soon?

Here is an example of what many companies teach in their business opportunity presentations. Many of them show you a diagram and tell you all you have to do is sponsor 3 who get 3. Then they show you how on your 7th level you’ll have 2100 people.

This is not the way your MLM downline works

The problem is that in reality this is NEVER how it works. It never works out perfectly where you get 3 who each go out and get 3, and then they get 3, etc.I repeat it never works out this way. It usually takes several people before you find just ONE that will work at the business. Because of this most new network marketers (MLMer’s) give up right here:

Most MLMers quit here

You see they have been told that all they have to do is get 3 and they’ll be millionaires so most MLMers quit here. Many of them spend a lot of time trying to teach these 3. Many of them stop recruiting and spend all their time trying to work with these 3 and drag them with them. They get discouraged and give up.

Even future leaders can get discouraged. They may go out and sponsor 5 or 10 or more people and get discouraged when it doesn’t work out. Why? Because they’ve been mislead.

Even experienced people quit here.

In reality it usually takes 20-30 people to find just one leader. The potential leader in the above example might have given up just before he found his next leader!

In reality this is probably a better example of what your organization will look like from a successful MLMer.

Real example of a downline

You see this person stuck around long enough. They personally sponsored 20 or so people and while only a small percentage (20% or so) did something with their business, they found that one person who was a leader and their business began to really grow. And pretty soon they found another leader. It may not come from someone you personally sponsor. It might be several levels down. If you stick with it and sponsor enough people and train enough people it will happen.

If we began to show examples like this, would we be more successful in MLM?

If we began to show examples like this would we have less people who get angry thinking “we took their money”?

If we were honest like this and showed how much work is required would we sponsor less people but sponsor more qualified people?

What do you think?

Spot on. Nicely stated.

Yes, Ben, I think lots more people would stick with it if they had realistic expectations up front. I’ve been shown the whole filled-out thing and then had someone use some fuzzy math about “if only 10% of them did anything, you would still be making $$$$”. But it doesn’t exactly work that way, either. I always think honesty is the best policy.

I’ve been in several MLM companies and this model is SOOOO true. Although I knew it was a “numbers game” to find the right people, I because frustrated with people I had helped by placing new members in their downline coming up to me and asking me “… when are you going to put someone else under me?” I was shocked. This was NOT the way it’s supposed to work. Eventually, of course, these people all quit anyway. The ONLY way to succeed is to stick with it until you find other leaders. Then pour your efforts and energy into helping them. Leave the “whiners” to themselves and focus on the ones who are willing to “work” the opportunity as a business instead of as a hobby.

I think most network marketing (MLM) companies understand that most of those who enroll with their companies will actively promote the business for an average of three months before giving up. I think during this time period of 3 months is when many find out that finding 3 leaders is a lot more difficult than just finding 3 people to sign up.

I’ve used Glyphius for my copy-writing needs. Have any of you tried it?

Wow is this the truth. Luckily the first person I sponsored went on to sponsor more than twice as many people as me. Sometimes you get lucky, now we work very closely together in our main business. He even dropped all his other businesses and is just sticking to Liberty health net. Our team is now running adwords own 70% of sites advertised and we even have videos and pages on the first page for our company name, my site is officially on page 2 and I am still building it.

The underlying truth of all this is that emotion sells and then is dies because we want instant gratification and that is how this industry is sold to us….NOT FAIR!
Alot more people would stick around if we just told the truth in the beginning!

Thanks Ben, I tried one of these when I was younger and gave up way to soon. This time I’m in it for the long haul. I just retired from a job after 31 years and am tired of having a boss. Thanks for the honest model. That is what a lot of us need honesty instead of hype. The hype is just to frustrating. Now I am even more determined to make this work and work hard to make it work.

There is a lot of truth in your article. In my opinion the gift of deternmeination or sticking with a project thru until the end is one of the greatest gifts a human being can have. But I personally believe everyone can not be successful in MLM.
It takes a special kind of salesman who have to have
(1) great deternmination (the ability to stay motivated)
(2) great people skills
(3) great perserverence (the ability move on after rejection)
Without these gifts MLM selling is a waste of time for certain sellers.

Well explained Ben. It’s easier to build a business faster than it is to build it slower. people get unmotivated and lose interest easily so they drop-off. Then you have to replace them.
