Ten Words Most Often Used in Successful Headlines
I just saw this in Perry Marshall’s newsletter. I thought it would be something that you guys could benefit from. Regardless of whether or not you are writing headlines for the web or classified ads or whatever. This is some great stuff to think of.
Just yesterday of my team asked me about a card campaign they were going to send out and it lacked a little bit of the WIIFM factor. She probably could have benefited from this great info.
Here it is…

“7 Sales Killers & 10 Sales Winners”:TEN WORDS MOST OFTEN USED IN SUCCESSFUL HEADLINES
Most Master-level copywriting courses include dozens and sometimes
hundreds of headlines. They are valuable as templates, and classic
ad headlines can be tailored to new product or service offerings and
never get tired. The following words have already made millions of dollars in successful
sales for close to a century. This list is useful if you’re writing your own
headline, and want it to be a winner.Remember, everyone is listening to their favorite mental “radio station”
W.I.I.F.M., which stands for “What’s in it for me?”
1) You – The most important person in the world
2) Your – The most important possessor in the world
3) How – Monkey curiosity bump, scratched here
4) New – Oh? Really? Am I one of the first to know?
5) Who – This one frequently begins, “Who else wants to …” and
continues with “become rich without working?” “have a million dollar
smile for a fraction of the cost?”6) Money – no one ever has enough, even billionaires, so this is a
strong hook.7) Now – time is related to money in most people’s minds. So,
better pay attention to whatever is being announced “Now.”
People – Hey! That’s me! I’m people; maybe this is addressed to me.
9) Want – We all want more. And different. And new.
10) Why – Monkey curiosity again. The answer to this question is
always “because.”To see the rest, just click here:

Hi nice post, I just within the last week had started researching about copy writing and how to use it to your advantage with a home business. I have my own business that I have been working towards building on and off for 3 years now. Within the last 12 months thing have started picking up and I started getting serious about it. After reading your post I couldn’t help but think about how much a headline and can change what you are writing about. You grab your target audience by that headline. If you have a headline like,”The Way To Give Your Kids More Than You Had”. The person clicks on it because the headline interests them and then content is directed towards people that are retired. Advertising is tricky like that. You have to find sites and stay targeted to your audience and sometimes it is easy to ramble off of topic when writing. Sorry I know this is kind of off subject but when I was reading the part in your blog about headlines my thoughts started clicking:-)
Words are so powerful and can attract a person without them even being totally conscious of it. When words are very direct and personal they can sway you and get you into a mindset that you were not in previously. The whole concept of Attraction Marketing revolves around this principle. Get your readers’ attention, keep them there, and keep their mind open. The most fascinating part is that words like: How, Who, Why, and Learn are all so simple and we were all taught about them in English class in school! Cheers, G.
