Week 2 – Do something that makes me feel uncomfortable

In my series on my business plan for 2009 I’ve been discussing a plan of action.

My week 2 plan of action is to do something that makes me feel uncomfortable. Why would I want to do that? It makes me feel uncomfortable right?

The reason is because I’m trying to stretch myself. I’m trying to push myself.  When I do these things I grow as a person and my business grows because of it.  If you are comfortable you probably aren’t making enough money.

Think about the athlete.  If they didn’t constantly make their workouts longer and harder they’d never get any stronger.  By stretching themselves and pushing themselves they allow themselves to grow.

So what might make you feel uncomfortable?

For me, I’m an internet guy.  Going out and joining a networking group makes me a little uncomfortable.

For you it might be talking to your family.  Your family might be the person you are most afraid of rejecting you.

Or maybe it’s cold calling.  Maybe it’s just a fear of the phone.

If you can push yourself you can grow and your business will grow as a result.  You won’t be perfect at it the first time and that’s ok!  Learn from it and get better.

Great post!

I believe that too many people stay in that “homeostasis” or “comfort zone” so long that it becomes harder and more difficult to embrace change and new frontiers.

Like working out (per your post) it becomes harder the longer you wait to get out the box.

I’ve found that when I do something uncomfortable FIRST THING, it actually turns out to be a lot less uncomfortable than I thought it would be. And it gets RESULTS better than ANYTHING else.

Thanks so much for this idea of stretching by going outside our comfort zones. I have to look at this one really closely since I’m comfortable with networking in person and on the phone. Very good advice. The reason why so few people put their words into action is because it requires them to get uncomfortable, out of their safety zone. By doing things that are out of the box, you will definitely train your mind to think in a new way and also gain some much needed confidence. Once you make some moves, others will follow, naturally.
