Book recommendation: The Other 8 Hours

Hi readers,

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a fellow named Robert Pagliarini. He said that he was the author of a new book called The Other 8 Hours: Maximize Your Free Time to Create Wealth & Purpose. He wanted to send me a free copy of the book to review it, no strings attached.

I agreed to read the book and less than a week later the book arrived from the publisher.

I had a plane flight and brought the book with me.

It turned out to be a great book and I highly recommend all of you get over to the Other 8 Hours and check it out. When you get there you’re going to find a ton of free resources, a newsletter, and yes, you can also buy the book. I don’t get a commission or anything other than a free copy of the book to read icon smile Book recommendation: The Other 8 Hours

The book talks about how we have only 24 hours a day. In the book Robert explains how MOST of who we are in our lives is made up of what we do in that other 8 hours. Meaning the 8 hours we aren’t at work or aren’t at sleep. In fact most of us really don’t have 8 hours. Our day probably goes something like:

6 AM wakeup & get ready for work
7:15 AM leave for work
8 AM arrive at work
8 AM – Noon work
Noon-1 PM lunch
1 PM – 5 PM work
5 PM to 6 PM drive home (why is afternoon traffic always worse than morning traffic?)
6 PM – 11 PM (5 hours of personal time)
11 PM to 6 AM (7 hours of sleep, not even a full 8 hours)

Most of our lives probably looks very similar to this. Between getting ready for work, going to work, working, driving home, etc. we actually end up with less than 8 hours of personal time a day.

However this extra 8 hours are in fact the most important hours of our lives. Let me state that again. These other 8 hours are the most important hours of our lives.

Think about it… You probably met your spouse and dated your spouse during these other 8 hours. If you have kids you probably made them during the other 8 hours. You raise them during the other 8 hours. You go to church and do your social activities during these other 8 hours. Some of the most important things we do in life make up the other 8 hours.

What this book is about is about making the most of the other 8 hours. The web site the other 8 hours also resources on how to make the most out of your other 8 hours. Robert even mentions starting a business as a way to eventually have more time and do the stuff you want to do instead of going to work a job for some corporate boss. He even mentions network marketing as one possible business. icon smile Book recommendation: The Other 8 Hours Although he doesn’t speak real highly of network marketing.

One of the other tools he has is similar to my schedule for part-time networkers. It helps you plan out your schedule and make the most of your time.

The book was a really good read. I read the entire book and underlined several parapgraphs. I think you’ll like the book too.

You said he “doesn’t speak real highly of network marketing” but I found the following in one of his blogs titled, “Why you should join Amway”…

“…If you want to use the other 8 hours to make more money, but aren’t sure where to start, I strongly suggest you look at Amway or even another network marketing company. Why? It is the easiest and quickest way to start your own business. You can read all you want about starting a business, but it’s different when you actually have your own business…”

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for the comment.

I’ll try and explain my point a little better.

The reason for my comments was that I didn’t feel that Robert sees network marketing as a way to make a lot of money. In his book he basically says it’s a 1 star out of 4 star option. He goes on to talk about other options like starting your own business, writing a book, etc. that he feels can make more money.

Mostly because so many people fail and although there is a lot of money to be made in network marketing, most people don’t get there. Less than 1% of the people make it to the top and make the really big money. I make more than MOST book authors do. I make more than MOST bloggers do. But then again I also make more than MOST network marketers do. So I guess I’m just an above average type of person. That’s why I find it hard to rate something.

If you look at someone like Perez Hilton who is a fashion/entertainment blogger. He probably could have made a lot of money doing something else. He could have been a columnist/book author. He could have been a tv personality (and now he is.) He’s an above average person with a gregarious personality and people are attracted to him.

Saying blogging is a 2 star business and network marketing is a 1 star business in my mind is really up to the person, not the business. This is one point where I disagree with Robert Pagliarini.

I think that there are a ton of bloggers out there working for beer money. Not really making any real money at it. They might make $50 a month in Google Adsense revenues, Amazon, or itunes sales, etc. There are a ton of book authors out there paying to have their book published and struggling to sell enough copies to break even. I’ve even heard from a few other authors that the advance they get for their books which sell pretty well aren’t what I make from my MLM business.

Whether or not you are successful in business doesn’t have that much to do with the business. It has some effect, but a larger effect is YOU.

That’s my point :)

Wow! Thanks for the quick reply!
I have not read the book, only explored the website after reading your review. Also, I am not with Amway, so I’m not promoting or demeaning it.
But I agree with what you have written. When people say only 1% or 3% of network marketers make it to the top and earn “all” the money, I want to ask what percentage REALLY work their business and stay with it even when it seems everyone is saying no … probably 1% or 3%. Like you said, it has more to do with you than with the business, whether it’s network marketing or any other business. I just thought it was interesting that he blogged about the valuable business education that can be gained from network marketing.
