This is part of my series on the dirty secrets of network marketing. The stuff they don’t want you to know about in opportunity meetings.

Income claims.

Most people’s income claims are based on bogus numbers.

You go to a meeting. They show you a diagram 3 people who got 3 people who got 3.

That is a load of crap.

The first thing is that it never works out that way. What happens in reality is 80% do NOTHING, they just give up before they ever get started. 20% do something and get a few customers and use the products themselves. About 10% actually get a distirbutor or two. About 5% are hard workers and will get several distributors and or several customers. 1% will be real leaders. They’ll be independent and won’t care what kind of stupid things you do, they’re independent and KNOW what it takes to succeed. They’re unstoppable.

You only have to find 2 leaders. The top networkers have only found 2-3 leaders each.

My own Send Out Cards organization is like that. One leader makes up the majority of my team. I’ve sponsored some of those 80% people that do nothing… and some of those 20% that do something… and a few of those 10% that get one or two distributors of their own. I’m still looking for that next big leader.

And I’ve sponsored dozens of people. Not just 3 people. It takes a lot more than 3 people to build an organization.

In my old company Cognigen I’ve sponsored approximately 90 people!

Of course if all you want to do is make an extra $300 you probably don’t need to sponsor 90 people.

However if you are one of these people that call me wanting to make $10,000 a month you better be prepared to sponsor 50 people or more. Don’t call me expecting to make that kind of money if all you want to do is sponsor 3 and then sit back and watch the money roll in. It won’t happen.

A few weeks ago I told you I’d tell you a dirty secret of network marketing.

I think maybe this should become a series of secrets.

1. In many companies leaders don’t make as much money from their downline directly as they do from selling them additional products, services, training materials, etc.

Think about it. Even the nice leaders I know… who don’t do it on purpose…

They still recommend a place to get a toll free number. A place to buy leads. A place to get your lead generation web sites from. They may refer you to a printer for business cards, a sign maker for signs, a business networking group to generate your own leads, a web hosting company to get your web site from, a domain name provider to buy domain names from, etc.

This is big business.

And I’m not even talking about Amway/Quixtar where they sell you training tapes and videos and get you to give away “kits” which include a cdrom or video. You have to order dozens (or hundreds) of these kits to give away to find people to sponsor.

PS. Yep I do it too. I sell my Send Out Cards marketing web sites to anyone who wants them. Originally I gave them away free but it became time consuming and resource intensive. Plus people that weren’t on my team were requesting them. So now I give away free versions that have google adsense ads on them and I also have paid versions which don’t have any ads and offer extra features.

I wrote in #2 about income claims. Well I want to address that even further.

Most of the income claims you see are bogus.

Most companies seem to be designed around a monthly volume of approximately $30. Some maybe $100 or so.

Keep in mind that most of your distributors aren’t going to do anything. They won’t even use the product. Or they’ll use it for a couple of months and give up and cancel their orders. So you can’t count on their volume.

In reality you’re going to make about $1 per distributor.

YES that’s right. $1 per distributor.

At least that’s been my experience in several companies. Maybe there are some high end companies out there that will break the mold… But starting out you’re going to make about $1 per distributor on recurring income.

5% of $30 is $1.50 right?

But seeing as many distributors quit and will cancel their auto orders. A few will get several customers and they might have $200 in volume… But most will be right around the minimum.

It really doesn’t matter what company it is. You can be talking long distance or vitamins or greeting cards. You’re overrides always seem to end up being around $1 per distributor. In some cases LOWER than this.

That is the real income claim for your first few months or first few years… Until you begin to work your way up the compensation plan. As you work your way up the bonus money kicks in and that is where the real income is.

Just don’t believe the hype that because you personally sponsor 20 people you’re going to have a downline of 20 x 3 = 60 x 3 = 180 x 3 =540… and that you’re going to making thousands a month off these guys… You’d be lucky to make $540.

HOWEVER $540 is a lot of money… recuring every month. You know how much money you’d need in the bank to make that at 7% interest? Hundreds of thousands of dollars. So you’re little business has equaled a very fat savings account in just a couple of years worth of hard work.

But don’t be misled to think you can turn it into $10,000 a month in 3 months… Thats just hype. Start with the $1 a distributor calculation. And as you work your way up you’ll see those numbers grow. The bonuses and overrides will kick in.

(I’m talking actual recurring income, not signup or coaching bonuses which are one time payments.)

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to show you this or not.

This is a secret.

I don’t know what Mike Filsaime is going to do when he launches the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript… One of the things I do know is that when I bought the Butterfly Marketing cgi script including the manuscript, Mike gave us access to a top secret forum! I screwed up!
