Dear readers,
You shouldn’t have to ask for referrals, especially in your Holiday cards.
As the Holiday season nears you should be sending out Holiday cards to your clients, your team members, your family, and friends.
One mistake a lot of people make is they send a card which is basically a glorified sales message. They put together a Holiday Card and maybe they get some custom cards made. Maybe they try to make the card unique and fun but then they junk it up with a sales message, asking for referrals. One client I had put their logo into a Christmas ornament and had a card designed so it looks like the ornaments were on the tree. Now that is clever and might catch people’s attention. It might make people take a second look at the card or a stranger might even pick it up to see what the funny symbols in the ornaments are.

Then they messed it all up. They wanted to put a sales message inside to ask for referrals. They wanted to put a copy of their business card inside.
Now if this client hasn’t heard from you in 6 months or a year and the first message is a Happy Holiday Card that says “We’d love your referrals”… Doesn’t that seem a bit over the top?
There are a few cards where you should never ask for the referral. You should never ask for a referral in a birthday card, a holiday card, or of course a condolence card.
Some people will say that the person won’t know who you are if you don’t put your business card in there or phone number or whatever. I say hog wash! If you have been keeping up with them and following up with them over the past year then they should remember you.
I make fun and interesting cards. I find that these cards get more referrals. If you saw a bunch of cards on a shelf which card would you pick up? The boring generic “Happy Holidays” card or my card? That’s how I get referrals from my Holiday Cards!
