Network Marketing & MLM Training by Home Business Blogs

People are thinking WAY TOO SMALL

Today I read a great article from Perry Marshall in his newsletter which was so good I had to repost.

Perry is an e-business guru. He was one of the first big name Google Adwords guys. He taught people how to buy PPC advertising on Google’s Adwords program. He has become more of a general internet/e-business expert.

You might be wondering what this has to do with MLM and home business? Read on and find out. He even has an example from Amway.

Benjamin,

Yesterday I was talking to Matt Gillogly and he said to me, “If I have another conversation with a guy who thinks he’s gonna go out and do marketing for local plumbers and flower shops, I think I’m gonna scream! People are thinking WAY TOO SMALL.”

Disqualifier Numero Uno for *any* business deal you ever get into is this:

DO THEY HAVE THE MONEY?

How much money does the local plumber or flower shop have? How much do they spend on marketing and advertising – right now?

If you have this idea that you’re going to hopefully someday get them to $15,000/month and giving you $5,000… but right now they’re spending $1500 a month….

You’re safer betting the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series.

Why do people entertain fantasies like this?

I call it Rainmaker Head Trash. It’s the mental garbage that people who CAN be rainmakers, and who aspire to kick royal ass out there in the marketplace, sabotage themselves with.

I did this all the time when I was in Amway. Here’s a for-instance:

I sponsor this guy Jose who works at the Post Office. He sponsors his sister who also works at the Post Office. She sponsors this couple named Pamela and Gonzalo who live up the street. Gonzalo is a college student and they live in a ghetto in this tiny apartment that smells like urine. She’s “looking for work” and I think they’re living on a thousand bucks a month.

Guess what kind of people they’re putting on their names list?

Meanwhile I’m thinking, “Man, I’m going to HELP Pamela and Gonzalo escape this grinding poverty and someday it’s gonna be so great…”

Here Pamela, let me buy those tickets so you can go to the next seminar and learn how to get rich.

One chance in a million, baby. Might as well play the lottery.

Who SHOULD I be talking to?

A cardiologist.

Was I comfortable talking to a cardiologist?

Of course not.

Did I feel like I could help him?

Of course not.

But if Amway actually worked (it didn’t, but that’s beside the point) I would get the farthest the fastest by not trying to steer a parked car.

Lesson Numero Uno about your life as an entrepreneur is this:

If you’re thinking big, then you’re always tackling things that are bigger than you, and you’re taking on clients with BIG businesses not little ones. You’re ALWAYS feeling that queasy feeling in your stomach. You’re always stretching your brain.

If you’re a copywriter, there’s 100,000 BIG websites and 90,000 of them have lousy copy.

If you’re a PPC manager, there’s 100,000 BIG Google accounts and 90,000 of them are a complete mess.

If you’re a business strategist, there’s a 100,000 decent sized companies and 90% have a crappy strategy.

You can make the flower shop $1,000 per month or you can make a medical device manufacturer $50,000 per month. With the same amount of work.

Which way do you want it?

The irony is, you are exponentially MORE valuable to a big business than a little one. Even though you question your own value.

As my own business has grown, I have ALWAYS had to set my own head straight on how much value I deliver. Is $25,000 a lot of money to charge for Private Client Group? It’s one half of one percent of annual revenue for a $5 million company. One guy, whose business is much smaller than that, earned back his dinero in our first 30 minute phone call.

When tiny hinges swing big doors, $25,000 ain’t much at all.

There is a place where your skills are worth five figures a month. It’s just a question of where.

What a really great sensation when you stop driving parked cars and finally head down the expressway, full speed. Eventually you come to love that queasy, “Think Big” feeling. You embrace it ‘cuz it keeps paying off.

Search Engine Optimization for WordPress Bloggers

wordpress icon Search Engine Optimization for Wordpress BloggersDear readers,

My good friend Jack Spirko wrote an awesome blog post today about how to do search engine optimization for wordpress blogs.  He talks about plugins to use. He gives you some tips on how to get links, and also some tips on how to turn your blog posts into cash.

If you are a blogger or podcaster or are thinking about setting up a home business you’ll want to read Jack’s post.  He gives a lot of solid advice on why you need a blog and how to make money from that blog.

I’d also like to recommend another article on SEO for WordPress by Yoast (Joost de Valk). Yoast is a WordPress plugin developer who has a lot of expertise in SEO.

Do I practice what I preach? I wrote my book Nichework Marketing  about the importance of blogging for your business. I also recently converted my Custom Greeting Card Guy web site from a traditional web site to a WordPress powered site. I’m using many of the same plugins Jack and Yoast talk about in their articles on WordPress SEO and my site ranks very well (top 3) for a bunch of keywords on Google.

Check out the articles above on Search Engine Optimization for WordPress (SEO) and let me know if you have any questions. I’m happy to help!

Make Your Websites Search Engine Friendly

seo friendly Make Your Websites Search Engine FriendlyDear readers,

Would you like to make your websites search engine friendly?

Have you heard about the Google “Panda” update?

In case you aren’t a search engine nut like me let me give you a quick explanation.

Every so often Google updates their algorithm that evaluates your web site and chooses what keywords your web sites rank for.

The last major update was called “Panda” and it caused a lot of stir.  Many web sites lost their rankings including some from major brands like Overstock.com, JCPenney, and even Forbes.  A lot of smaller companies lost their rankings as well.

One of the major changes Google made in Panda was to place a greater emphasis on quality.

I’m not going to go into details on Panda.  Instead let’s talk about things you can do to make your websites search engine friendly and hopefully improve that “quality” score so you don’t end up getting penalized by Google. (This especially applies if you’re doing niche marketing with me over at Nichework Marketing.)

Today there was a great article from Wordtracker.  The article discussed 3 smart ways to make your content more valuable and sharable.

One of the things discussed was to add multimedia to your content.  If you saw my new Custom Greeting Card Guy web site I announced earlier this week… You saw that I added both Animoto video and YouTube video as well as static images to “spice” up the content.  This was a simple way to add value and quality to my web site.

Little things you do like adding multimedia can make your content stand out.  Instead of making your web site look like an article farm or content farm multimedia shows you put in some extra effort.  A little multimedia can instantly make your websites search engine friendly.

For more tips on how to improve the quality of your content (in the eyes of Google) make sure to read the excellent wordtracker article.

Do Twitter and Facebook help with SEO?

Dear readers,

In my recent research into Twitter (and working to learn Facebook better) I’ve discovered that Twitter and Facebook can help with your SEO (search engine optimization).

It looks like the search engines are actually paying attention to social signals.  One article I read recently (and I lost the link so I apologize)…. The article said that because the search engines have relied so heavily on keyword links that they realize this is a flaw in their ranking system.  Since a large portion of your web sites ranking relies on the keyword links coming to it… it leaves the search engines open to manipulation by spammers.

One of the methods as outlined in this article at Search Engine Land is that the search engines are now looking at Twitter and Facebook.   It looks like they’re looking at links posted on these sites and links that are retweeted and liked.  These links will get a little bit more consideration than links that don’t tweeted or liked.

It also looks like the search engines are also looking at your personal authority. You might call it a “social rank”. You have a Page Rank which is a measure of the authority of your site on a given topic, you might also get a social rank which is the measure of your authority on Twitter or Facebook.  I believe Google called it “author authority”.  I guess that means they’re going to look at factors like how many followers you have, vs. how many you follow. They might take into consideration other factors like how often you tweet.  I do think it is safe to say now is the time to use some of the twitter resources to begin to un-follow people.  It’s also important to build your followers.

Anecdotally: If you run Google alerts you can see that many of the alerts you’ll get relate to the social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

Again some of this information is speculative.  Some of it is anecdotal. Some of it comes from discussions with other experts or even the search engines themselves.

I hope you guys can see why I’ve been talking so much about Twitter icon smile Do Twitter and Facebook help with SEO? It looks like Twitter is becoming more and more important. I think one reason is because someone can measure your Twitter authority easier than they can measure your Facebook authority.  I think it’s safe to say both are important though (and more important than I thought 3 weeks ago!)

And if this doesn’t make sense…. leave a comment and ask some questions. I’m glad to help. Sometimes I take for granted what you may or may not know icon smile Do Twitter and Facebook help with SEO?

Do you blog? Do you want to do SEO?

Dear readers,

Are you a blogger? Do you want do SEO? Do you want to get better search engine rankings?

There is a new plugin for WordPress blogs which takes a lot of the SEO burden off your shoulders.  This plugin replaces a half dozen other plugins.   The plugin is simply enough called WordPress SEO.  It is written by Joost De Valk who is a well known plugin writer as well as the host of a popular WordPress podcast.

WordPress SEO is a great new plugin.  It replaces the need for separate plugins. Before you’d need plugins for:

  • Titles
  • XML sitemaps
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Google Analytics
  • Meta Headers
  • robots.txt
  • RSS footers

WordPress SEO attempts to put all these tasks into one plugin.  It can even look at your configuration and popup some basic warning messages for SEO optimization.

Congrats Joost. You did a great job with this plugin!
